The art of selecting the perfect rug for you

Because of the variety of rug designs, colors, shapes, and sizes available in the market today, it has become increasingly hard to choose one which will adequately address our needs and match our visual tastes. Knowing how these variables can affect your choice is the first step in making an informed rug purchasing decision.

It is very important to choose a rug style that is not only attuned to your aesthetic taste, it should also match or complement the overall design theme of your home or specific rooms in the house. A wide array of rug designs is available in the market today; you can choose between contemporary and traditional designs or among rug styles from different cultural influences like Middle Eastern, European, Asian, or Native American. Rugs with a lighter shade tend to give more life to a room while darker rugs give off a more classy air but absorb more heat from light. For high traffic areas of the room, use thicker, more durable rugs.

Knowing the benefits and disadvantages of the different raw materials used in most rugs can also help you choose the perfect rug based on your needs. Area rugs are usually made of natural fibers like silk or nylon, and synthetic materials like nylon, olefin, polyester, and acrylic; some types of rugs even use a blend of these materials. Woolen rugs, while typically more expensive than other types of rugs, are dirt resistant and are characteristically more durable than rugs of other make. These rugs come in a wider variety of designs and colors because they are easier to dye than synthetic rugs. On the other hand, while cheap rugs are often made of relatively more inexpensive synthetic materials, they are also strong and durable and patters and colors take a longer time to wear.
